一是表示某姓氏的一家人。如：
Invite the Smiths, but not the Robinsons. 邀请史密斯一家而不邀请罗伯逊一家。
The Whites have gone for a holiday on the Continent. 怀特一家去欧洲国内度假了。
The Smiths live in the apartment above ours. 史密斯一家住在大家楼上的一套房间里。
The Lamberts liked their new home, although they missed their friends. 兰伯特一家喜欢他们的新家，可是他们又想念他们的朋友们。
二是表示夫妇二人。如：
The Joneses have two boys and a girl. 琼斯夫妇有两个男生一个女生。
